How to Optimize Google Ads Demand Gen Campaigns

Optimizing Google Ads Demand Gen Campaigns for Improved KPIs

optimize google ads demand gen

Google Demand Gen ads are AI powered visual ad campaigns. These ads are not like the traditional Search Ads where bid on keywords & intent, they display on platforms like YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Discover, Gmail, Maps, and Google Display Network. Google describes them as a campaign type built to drive engagement and action across these browse/discovery platforms, not just people actively searching on Google Search. (Google Help). Learn how to Optimize Google Ads Deman Gen campaigns for your business to thrive and improve ROI by reading this full article by Momentum Digital.

Personally, I’ve been using Google Ads for nearly 2 decades, starting out as a business owner in college, back when CPCs were <$1. Here we are 16, years later, and I’ve managed over $20 Million in campaign dollars across thousands of clients. What I’ve noticed is how Google Ads Search Campaigns have become extremely competitive and expensive, so they’re now trying to leverage AI based campaigns and user data across all their Google Platforms, in order to drive more leads for their advertisers, at a similar cost per acquisition. However, it doesnt always seem to work as expected. The CPCs & CPMs are much lower, but the CPA and overall transparency are much worse.

This is a step-by-step guide to Optimize Google Ads Demand Gen Campaigns.

How Demand Gen targeting works?

Demand Gen Ads targets audiences, not keywords.

You can target users using:

  • Your first party data: Website visitors, customer lists, app users, YouTube viewers, purchasers, cart abandoners, etc.
  • Lookalike segments: Demand Gen supports lookalike audiences based on seed lists such as purchasers, site visitors, or YouTube viewers. Google is transitioning lookalikes in 2026 toward more of a “suggestion/signal” model, meaning the seed audience helps guide Google AI rather than acting as a strict audience filter. (Google Help)
  • Custom segments: These can be based on keywords, URLs, and apps related to your ideal audience. For example, a roofing company could use competitor URLs, “roof replacement cost,” “storm damage roof repair,” “best roofing company,” etc. Google’s FAQ recommends 10–15 search keywords for custom segments when using Max Clicks. (Google Help)
  • In-market, affinity, life events, and detailed demographics: Google estimates audiences based on interests, intent, demographics, Google activity, and third-party website behavior. (Google Help)
  • Optimized targeting (AI expansion): This is the big one. Optimized targeting uses your selected audiences or keywords as signals, then Google may go beyond them to find people more likely to convert. Google states that your audience selections are only a starting point. As the campaign learns, it may serve fewer impressions to your original audiences if it finds higher-performing users elsewhere. (Google Help)

You guide the machine, but you do not fully control every impression.

What Industries should use Google Ads Deman Generation Campaigns?

Not every type of company or industry should try or use Demand Gen. So if you never start one of these campaigns you wont really need to learn how to optimize a Google Ads Demand Gen campaign. These campaigns are better suited for driving targeted awareness to clicks, and then remarketed to for conversions.

As a former Googler and CEO of Momentum Digital, I recommend Demand Gen campaigns for businesses that need to reach potential customers before they actively search.

They work especially well for ecommerce brands, home service companies, medical and cosmetic practices, real estate professionals, law firms, fitness and wellness brands, education companies, B2B businesses, franchises, and event-based companies.

List of Industries that can benefit:

  • Ecommerce brands – Showcase products visually and drive online sales through YouTube, Gmail, Discover, and Shorts.
  • Home service companies (roofers, remodelers, landscapers, painters, etc.) – Stay top-of-mind before customers are actively searching.
  • Medical & cosmetic practices – Promote elective services like med spas, dental implants, plastic surgery, and weight loss.
  • Real estate agents & home builders – Build awareness and nurture buyers over longer decision cycles.
  • Law firms – Great for practice areas where people research before hiring (estate planning, family law, personal injury).
  • Fitness, wellness & beauty brands – Drive memberships, appointments, and product sales with engaging visual content.
  • Education & online courses – Generate leads from users discovering new learning opportunities.
  • B2B companies – Build brand awareness, generate leads, and remarket to decision-makers.
  • Franchises & multi-location businesses – Increase local awareness and reach new audiences.
  • Event venues, entertainment & hospitality – Promote seasonal offers, events, and bookings.

Demand Gen uses visual ads across YouTube, Shorts, Discover, and Gmail to build awareness, introduce offers, retarget interested audiences, and generate leads or sales. It is most effective for businesses with strong creative assets, clear offers, longer buying cycles, or a need to expand beyond traditional Search campaigns.

How to optimize Demand Gen Targeting

1. Start with stronger first-party data

The best targeting seed is usually:

  • Past purchasers
  • Qualified leads
  • High-value customers
  • Add-to-cart users
  • Checkout abandoners
  • Email list / CRM list
  • Website visitors from high-intent pages
  • YouTube viewers who watched meaningful videos

For ecommerce, use purchaser lists and product viewers. For lead gen, use qualified leads, booked calls, completed forms, and closed customers.

2. Separate prospecting and remarketing

Avoid combining everything into one campaign.

Instead, build separate campaigns:

Campaign 1: Prospecting
Custom segments, lookalikes, in-market audiences, competitor URLs, and interest-based audiences.

Campaign 2: Remarketing
Website visitors, cart abandoners, product viewers, lead form visitors, YouTube engagers, email list, and past customers if relevant.

This makes reporting and budget control much easier.

3. Use better conversion signals

Bad Demand Gen performance often comes from weak conversion goals.

Avoid optimizing only for:

  • Page views
  • Time on site
  • Low-quality form fills
  • Button clicks
  • Newsletter signups, unless that is truly the goal

Better conversion actions:

  • Purchases
  • Qualified leads
  • Booked appointments
  • Quote requests
  • Calls over a certain duration
  • Add to cart / begin checkout for ecommerce
  • Offline imported qualified leads or closed sales

Google recommends conversion-focused bidding like Maximize Conversions or Target CPA when your goal is conversions, because the system relies on conversion data to optimize performance. (Google Help)

4. Build tighter custom segments

For better targeting, build custom segments around actual buyer intent.

Bad custom segment:

  • marketing
  • business
  • services
  • home
  • laptop

Better custom segment examples:

  • “roof replacement cost”
  • “emergency roof repair near me”
  • “gaming laptop RTX 4080”
  • “best laptop for video editing”
  • competitor URLs
  • product category URLs
  • industry blogs/forums/review sites

Think of custom segments as audience intent signals, not exact search keyword targeting.

5. Monitor Demographics and Creative Performance

Demand Gen reporting includes campaign/ad group reporting, top ads, video analytics, conversions, demographics, and other performance views. (Google Help)

Check:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Household income, where available
  • Devices
  • Locations
  • Top creatives
  • Video performance
  • Ad group performance
  • Audience segment performance
  • Conversion quality by campaign

Then remove or separate obvious weak performers.

Negatives and Exclusions to Reduce Bad Clicks

Demand Gen handles exclusions differently than Search campaigns. And this is important, because you can end of wasting a ton of ad dollars on terrible irrelevant clicks. So here are some key campaign exclusions to be aware of using.

1. Use audience exclusions

Demand Gen allows you to exclude audience segments, including first-party data. (Google Help)

Good exclusions:

  • Existing customers, if you only want new customers
  • Recent converters
  • Employees
  • Job seekers
  • Unqualified lead lists
  • Low-value customer lists
  • Support-only visitors
  • Careers page visitors
  • Current clients
  • People who already purchased, unless upselling

For lead gen, I’d almost always exclude:

  • Existing customers
  • Recent form submissions
  • Careers/job seekers
  • Low-quality lead lists
  • Competitor/internal traffic where possible

2. Use account-level content suitability

For Demand Gen, brand safety and content exclusions are mostly handled at the account-level Content Suitability page. Google says core suitability settings are not available at the campaign level for Demand Gen, and keyword exclusions are available at the account level under Excluded content keywords. (Google Help)

Use this to exclude broad junk themes like:

  • jobs
  • careers
  • free
  • DIY
  • cheap
  • template
  • scam
  • lawsuit
  • complaint
  • used
  • torrent
  • repair manual
  • discount only
  • training
  • course
  • student

But remember: these are content exclusions, not Search-style negative keywords.

3. Use placement exclusions carefully

Google allows account-level placement exclusions, but Demand Gen doesn’t offer the same campaign-level placement controls as traditional Display campaigns.

Instead of manually cleaning up placements, you’ll generally manage brand safety through account-level content suitability settings.

4. Exclude bad locations

Tighten geo settings aggressively.

For local lead gen:

  • Target exact service areas
  • Exclude locations outside service area
  • Watch city/location reports
  • Avoid overly broad state or national targeting unless the business truly serves it

For national ecommerce:

  • Exclude states/regions with poor CPA or low purchase quality
  • Separate high-performing regions into their own campaign if volume supports it

5. Exclude irrelevant demographics

If the data clearly shows certain demographics aren’t converting, consider excluding or separating them.

Examples:

  • Luxury remodeler: maybe exclude younger age groups if they click but never convert
  • B2B SaaS: exclude low-value consumer audiences if irrelevant
  • High-ticket ecommerce: review age, device, income, and location trends before cutting

Don’t overdo this too early. Give the campaign enough data first.

The Best Demand Gen Setup

I believe every advertiser (industry) should use Google Ads, but in a specific way related to their goals, targeting and budget. For example, search ads might work very well for a local repair company, and display ads may work better for a new product via ecommerce.

So, to Optimize Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns, try this:

  • Build separate campaigns for prospecting and remarketing.
  • Use strong first-party data: purchasers, qualified leads, high-intent visitors.
  • Create tight custom segments using buyer keywords, competitor URLs, product/category URLs, and industry websites.
  • Use Maximize Conversions or Target CPA, not Max Clicks, if lead quality matters.
  • Exclude recent converters, existing customers, job seekers, bad-fit lists, and low-quality lead lists.
  • Add account-level content keyword exclusions for junk traffic themes.
  • Review demographics, locations, devices, audiences, and top ads weekly.
  • Pause weak creative fast, but give targeting and bidding enough learning time. Google recommends waiting at least two weeks, or 50 conversions for new campaigns, before judging optimized targeting performance. (Google Help)

Demand Gen is not about finding perfect keyword intent. It is about giving Google the best audience signals, conversion signals, creative signals, and exclusion guardrails so the algorithm learns who is actually worth paying for.

How to Leverage Paid Ads for Luxury Remodeling

How to Leverage Paid Ads for Luxury Remodeling. Learn Best Practices for Remodelers using PPC for Leads!

Paid ads for luxury remodelers

Luxury remodeling brands typically need to rely on their leads converting to big jobs. In the digital marketplace, paid advertising is a modern opportunity to bring attention to a company.

While paid ads for luxury remodeling are focused on broad engagement or lead generation from prospects, it’s also geared towards branding. Upper-income households look at remodels and decide which fits their environment. This blog will help remodeling companies optimize paid advertising (PPC) tactics to improve ROI.

Are your paid ads bringing in high-end remodeling clients, or just clicks from people who were never going to spend luxury money in the first place?

Learn how to run precision-targeted, brand-forward campaigns that attract the right homeowners, elevate your image, and turn ad traffic into quality leads.

Precision Marketing in Paid Ads

A strategic paid ad funnel isn’t a glorified run for click-through rates. Instead, it’s pulling in the interested party already considering a remodel.

Paid ads let you to target right down to homeowner demographics: income/zip code, and property value, to advanced data points such as financial status and online behavior of individuals engaging in the latest home remodeling trends due to the AI in Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and display networks. For high-end remodeling companies, this guarantees no loss on ad spend via irrelevant demographics.

Campaign Objectives that Reflect Brand Identity

Before your ad goes live, the core question must be: What emotion do we want others to feel?

Luxury market remodelers should build campaigns around desire and value to convert.

For instance, some campaigns may aim to elevate awareness by including projects and case studies. Others might concentrate on qualified consultations or re-engaging clients, assessing second-property upgrades. Each objective mirrors the brand’s tone and branding.

Images in paid advertising for luxury remodeling should master the visuals and vibes people are looking for in a company. Rather than stock photos of renovations, use authentic shots with natural lighting, before and after photos, and various video walkthroughs.

Storytelling is also a must. Ad verbiage must narrate the “why” behind each project: why this marble was chosen, why the layout enhances comfort, why the new construction is sitting on “gold,” so to speak. Through this, ads blend into curated expressions of the same detailing found in your design portfolio.

Choosing the Right Platforms and Ad Formats

Advertising channels define how effectively you reach your audience.

  • Google Ads = cater to high-intent searches. A homeowner looking up “luxury home remodeling near me” is currently in motion. These campaigns thrive on optimized keyword selection and landing pages that extend your brand’s aesthetic.
  • Meta Ads = (Instagram and Facebook) showcase the visual aspects. Carousel ads and reels capture the movement of light, the curve of a staircase, and the atmosphere of a completed remodel.
  • YouTube Ads and Pinterest Ads = Showcase inspirational discoveries, ideal for storytelling homes.
  • LinkedIn Ads = target professionals, useful for connecting architects, designers, and real estate partnerships within the luxury market to your community.

Every format serves a purpose. Video showcases display continuity in the atmosphere. Carousels exhibit before-and-after sequences. Retargeting campaigns remind users of the content they have already seen, but not yet acted upon. The luxury remodelers job is not to show up everywhere; its to show up at the right time and place.

Budgeting for High-End Results

You gotta spend money to make money.

You cant expect to spend $1000 to land $100,000 contracts. Google and Meta know you can generate a lot of revenue from these jobs, and they price their ads accordingly (especially Google cpc).

Luxury remodelers need to make their process focused on high-quality leads, using paid media to drive consumer behavior to the high-end clientele. It may cost more to reach an impression or a cost-per-click basis, the returns are worth it if correctly nurtured. For example, one high-value project could justify an entire month of advertising spend if you understand how leads are cultivated.

The mindset needs to change from “How many leads did we get?” to “How many leads were consistent with our brand?”.

Nurturing Leads After the First Click

A real measure of paid ads is based on the lead conversion tactics. “Book Now,” should read as “Schedule a Private Consultation,” “Preview Your Custom Design Plan,” can be “See What Your Home Could Become.” It identifies visitors with a high-touch experience within minutes of clicking a link.

Once a lead enters your system, follow-up sequences should keep the luxury dialogue engaging. Automated thank-you messages may include lookbooks or video introductions from the design team. This personalized outreach extends the aesthetic conversation while building trust.

Integrating Paid Ads and Performance

Paid media in the luxury market is a continuous lever. The best remodelers approach landing pages, ad campaigns, and visuals with both analytics and creative instinct. Tools like the Google Ads dashboard, Meta Pixel, and GA4 inform how to refine audience segments, test new visuals, and evolve copy that aligns to searches.

Tracking metrics such as conversion rate, average session duration, and on-site engagement adds clarity to what’s resonating, showing where to allocate ad spend and which elements strengthen the emotional hold you are working towards.

Transparency: A New Market Currency

In marketing, attribution lets you solve ambiguity issues. Budgets are monitored, and operations within ads, especially outcomes, can display spend breakdowns. This shift immediately elevates your standing, turning verified cost-effectiveness into a security feature and competitive reward.

How to Create and Optimize Google Local Service Ads

How to Create and Optimize Google Local Service Ads

How to Create and Optimize Google Local Service Ads:
A Step-by-Step Guide

Curious about how Google Local Service Ads can grow your business? In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through how to create and optimize your LSA account for better visibility, higher rankings, and quality leads.

If you’ve run a business for a while, you’d know that visibility isn’t just helpful! It is the most critical aspect of building a brand. That’s where Google Local Service Ads (LSAs) step in as a game-changer. LSAs are designed specifically for service-based businesses looking to connect with nearby customers and offer a direct and trusted route to the top of Google’s search results.

So, what exactly are Google LSAs?

Unlike traditional pay-per-click ads, LSAs connect you directly with potential customers who are actively searching for services in your area. When someone searches for, say, “nail salon near me,” LSAs appear at the very top of the search results, with your business name, rating, and contact button ready to go. These ads seem to be preferred by small local service providers because of the transparency of the pay-per-lead component. So, if your organic Local SEO Marketing isn’t ranking your Google Business Profile or Website at the top of search results, then we’d suggest looking into Google Guaranteed Ads.

Why is it important?

There are a couple of benefits you can expect from LSAs, including:

  • Boosted Trust: Your business can earn a Google Guaranteed badge, which significantly helps build a reputation and credibility.
  • Top-tier Visibility: LSAs appear above standard search ads.

Pay-Per-Lead, Not Per Click: You only pay when someone contacts you through the ad, not just for visibility. This means you’ll be paying money for paying ads that are viewed by audiences with the highest possibility of conversion.

Google Local Services Ads LSA for Flooring

Who can use LSAs?

Not all businesses are eligible, but many are. LSAs are available in numerous industries, including:

  • Home Services (plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, house cleaners, locksmiths)
  • Real Estate (real estate agents, property managers)
  • Financial Services (tax services, accountants)
  • Legal Services (family lawyers, estate lawyers, immigration lawyers, personal injury lawyers)
  • Healthcare Services (dentists, chiropractors, therapists)
  • Pet Services (pet groomers, pet trainers)
  • Education Services (tutors, language instructors)
  • Event Services (photographers, DJs)
  • Personal Services (massage therapists, personal trainers)
  • And more…

To check if your business qualifies, visit Google’s Local Services eligibility tool.

Setting Up Your Google Local Service Ads Account

Getting started with LSAs is relatively straightforward, but each step matters.

Here’s a quick walkthrough to help you begin on the right foot:

Step 1: Create or update your Google Business Profile

If you haven’t already, set up a Google Business Profile. This isn’t just for LSAs, but for showing up in local search results in general. From here, follow these steps:

Step 2: Sign up for LSAs

Head over to the Google Local Services Ads platform to register. You’ll go through a short questionnaire to determine your eligibility.

Step 3: Complete the verification process

This step takes a bit longer, and you’ll need to be careful with the requested documents. Google takes consumer protection seriously. Depending on your industry and region, you may need to:

  • Submit background checks (for both the business owner and field workers)
  • Provide valid licenses and insurance documentation
  • Pass identity verification procedures

Step 4: Define your service area and hours

Well, this one needs no explanation. It’s just to ensure you only receive leads from areas where you operate and during times when you’re available.

Google LSA Verification

How to Craft an Effective LSA Profile?

Once your account is set up, the real work begins. From now on, your profile becomes your storefront, and you’ll need a compelling, polished profile to increase lead volume. So, here are a few tips to outshine competitor businesses:

  1. The business description is the first thing people see. Keep it friendly, honest, and concise. Focus on what sets you apart. For example, “Family-owned since 2003, we specialize in eco-friendly HVAC solutions and 24/7 emergency service.”
  2. You should always choose the most relevant service category for your business. Don’t overextend; more isn’t always better.
  3. Visuals matter! A good logo makes a lot of difference. You can also upload images of your team and recent products and services you provide. And make sure all the images are clear and high-resolution.

Don’t forget customer reviews! LSAs pull in reviews from your Google Business Profile. Ask happy clients to leave feedback and respond professionally to all reviews, even the most negative and critical ones.

How to Optimize the Ad Content?

Now that you’re live, you’ll need solid content to attract people. There’s a lot to cover on how to craft a good ad, but I’ll briefly mention some of the best practices:

  • Focus on what makes you unique! Years of experience, special certifications, or locally recognized service can all be powerful selling points.
  • Keep your message clear and to the point. Avoid jargon. Speak like your customer. For instance, “Licensed and bonded with same-day service available” works better than vague, big promises.
  • Use promotions or discounts. If you’re running any specials, like “10% off first service,” include it in your profile. Some people need something extra to take action.

Brand consistency. This might sound obvious, but lots of businesses don’t know how to get it done. The simplest way is to make sure your profile, images, and service descriptions match your Google Business Profile and website.

Google LSA Targeting Optimization

Targeting the Right Audience

Finding the right target audience is probably the most elementary principle of marketing, and yet, one of the hardest.

So, here are a few tips you can benefit from:

1. Define your geographic service area with care

Only want leads from a certain neighborhood, zip code, or city? You can set those boundaries in your account dashboard. This not only maximizes your ad dollars but also keeps your calendar full of clients you can realistically serve.

2. Job types: Be selective

Google allows you to indicate the exact services you offer. For example, if you’re a plumber who doesn’t do sewer line replacements, make sure that box isn’t checked. It’s a small but powerful filter to avoid getting irrelevant leads.

3. Focus on high-intent search behavior

LSAs are basically operating on a keyword-driven algorithm. That means Google will match you with customers who use phrases like “licensed electrician near me” or “emergency locksmith.” You don’t need to manage keywords manually (although it doesn’t hurt to do so), but being aware of what your customers search for can help shape your overall strategy.

Google LSA Location Targeting

Track Your Work and Measure the Performance

It doesn’t matter what kind of social media marketing strategy you have; If you’re not reviewing what’s working and what’s not, you can’t really expect progress.

Here’s how you do it:

Use the built-in LSA dashboard

Google makes it relatively simple to track leads, bookings, and responses. Inside your LSA dashboard, you’ll find:

  • Number of leads received
  • Customer interactions
  • Booking status

Use this information to optimize your ad content every few months.

Assess KPIs

While every business is different, the core metrics you’ll want to watch include:

  • Lead volume: How many leads are coming in per week?
  • Conversion rate: What percentage of those leads become customers?

Cost-per-lead (CPL): Are you paying a fair price for the quality of business you’re generating?

Set up call tracking

LSAs give you access to recorded calls. All you need is to define a system to analyze considerable amounts of raw data and generate actionable insights. Are staff responding quickly? Are potential customers getting the info they need?

Tips for Ongoing Optimization

Building effective campaigns is the result of putting in long hours, having a solid strategy, and making constant changes to stay on top of the market. Here are 3 failproof tactics you should always perform in your ad campaign:

  • Be responsive: Fast replies = better rankings and happier customers. Try to respond to every lead within minutes when possible.
  • Refresh your profile regularly: New reviews, updated photos, and seasonal service descriptions all contribute to a dynamic and engaging profile.
  • Perform A/B tests: Change ad copies or tweak service areas to test what works best. Keep it subtle—small changes over time can yield big results.

Remember, Google’s algorithm rewards businesses that engage with their leads and maintain a healthy presence. Also, it’s good to know some of the pitfalls you should watch for:

  • Incomplete or unverified profiles hurt your visibility! Make sure your licenses, insurance, and background checks are fully submitted and approved.
  • Avoid overbidding or underbidding on leads. Plan your spending wisely, especially if you’re in a competitive market with a limited budget. Test and adjust thoughtfully based on real performance.

Avoid unrealistic geographic targeting. Aiming for too broad an area is tempting, but it can lead to low-quality leads and frustrated customers. Be honest about where you can actually serve and stick to it.

Bottom Line

Now thats how you fully Optimize Google Local Service Ads.

Google’s search results have never been more local, and LSAs put you right where your customers are looking. You don’t need a huge ad budget to stand out. All you need is a well-optimized profile, a strong reputation, and a strategy you stick with.
