Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Cycle Brewerytown in Philadelphia.
Momentum Digital is back with another episode of Small Business Saturday, where we highlight a deserving company in the greater Philadelphia area. This Saturday we sat down with Tiffany the founder of Cycle Brewerytown.
Seven years ago, Tiffany went through a major life change. At the time, she was working for her husband. Tiffany’s job involved doing various financial and accounting duties when she decided it was time for her to branch out on her own.
She quit her job, left her husband, and decided to pursue her passion for spinning. Tiffany suffers from severe anxiety and cycling has impacted her life very positively. Before she started her business, she could never see herself as a cycling instructor, let alone a business owner. Cycling has helped her manage her anxiety by helping her focus and stop thinking about all of the nonsense going on in her mind.
She is originally from Miami but found herself in Philadelphia a few years ago. In pursuit of a potential spinning career, she worked as a cycling instructor, teaching classes at different cycling studios throughout the city.
For years, her life was traveling to different studios to teach and training clients privately in between classes. Tiffany moved to Brewerytown and one of her clients suggested that she open her own cycling studio in Brewerytown because there was none nearby or in the neighborhood. She initially put the idea off because she had no money and did not think a cycling studio would be successful at that time.
Fast forward a few years later, Tiffany gained a business partner who pushed her to pursue her dreams. Now, Cycle Brewerytown has been open and serving the community for 2 years!
Cycle Brewerytown – The Vision
Tiffany always had a clear picture of what she wanted Cycle Brewerytown to be – a studio revolving around Hip-Hop. This studio is all about hip-hop.
During her days as a traveling spin instructor, Tiffany got in trouble for the kind of music she wanted to play during her classes. She was told it was too “dirty” or “explicit.” Tiffany likes unedited versions of songs by artists like Meek Mill and Rick Ross. She wanted to create a space where that type of music was welcomed and embraced.
Tiffany believes that this music motivates a lot of people more than other music like EDM or Pop music.
Apart from cycling classes, there are also…
Conditioning Classes
These classes are all about conditioning the body. They include exercises with battle ropes or jump ropes to get the heart rate up.
Weight Bearing Circuit Classes
During these classes, you will work with different types of weights like kettlebells, and dumbbells while using a resistance band.
Ride and Conditioning Classes
These classes incorporate both cycling and condition exercises. This class is a 30 minute split between the two workouts – cycling and conditioning.
Ride and Flow Classes
Tiffany’s favorite class – this option is a cycling class followed by a 30 minute, all hip-hop yoga flow instruction.
For more information about Cycle Brewerytown, check out their website at https://www.cyclebrewerytown.com/ where you can find their full class schedule – You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Kink Shoppe in Philadelphia.
During this week’s episode of Small Business Saturday, we sat down with Fred Hoverman, owner and founder of Kink Shoppe. Located in Old City, Kink Shoppe is not your typical sex toy shop. Kink strives to promote a sex-positive, upscale shopping experience for everyone.
If you thought past Small Business Saturday features – like Mad Rex and Omkara Tattoo – were unique, wait until you read about this week’s featured business! In honor of pride month, we have connected with our friends as Kink Shoppe to bring you a special edition of Small Business Saturday.
Kink Shoppe – The Story
Fred started his career as a mechanical engineer. After years in the field and throughout many different jobs, he started to get bored and burnt out.
During this time, Fred started to consider going back to school to further his education. He started to ask himself – “If I were to go back to school, what would I want to do?”
After years of dwelling on it, Fred kept coming back to one thing – sex therapy.
Fred believed that in pursuing sex therapy, he could truly help people in their relationships and, overall, their lives. Halfway through submitting his applications for a few different masters and doctoral programs in sex education, Fred decided that he didn’t have as much time or money to devote to the program as he would like.
So – what now?
He knew that he still wanted to enhance peoples lives through sex and pleasure. So, he decided to open a high-end sex boutique. He wanted this space to make people feel comfortable in exploring their sexuality, asking questions, and learning about different products.
And that’s exactly what he did.
Kink Shoppe opened its doors seven years later, in 2012. The shop itself is a converted art gallery space. Fred aimed to keep the open, airy feeling of an art gallery in the store layout. The store also features lots of artwork on the walls, a nod to the location’s art background.
In 2017, five years after opening their doors, Kink Shoppe won Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly award for Best Unintimidating X-Rated Shop. This award was a huge deal to Fred and the shop as this is exactly what the goal was when the shop was opened.
Kink Shoppe – Getting Started
For a business like this, it is hard to get funding. Because of the industry that the shop is in, banks will not give any type of loan or support to the business.
Even though Kink Shoppe is high-end and education based, it is looped in with other businesses within the sex industry that may not be as appealing to investors.
So, if you are in this industry and need startup money, you have to rely on friends and family. Or, you can do what Fred did – peer-to-peer funding. The rest of the business’ startup money came from Fred out of pocket.
Kink Shoppe – The Products
Everything in the story is body safe. This is extremely important to the Kink team because there are toxic sex toys on the market that may be hard to spot. These toys can result in things like chemical burns and other harmful side effects.
Fred uses an array of industry sources and suggestions from industry bloggers to find products.
Everything in Kink is hand-picked and curated by Fred himself. This ensures that everything is high-quality and safe.
All of the items in shop are either made with silicone or ABS plastic – this means that the toys will not trap any dirt or harmful bacteria.
Another big part of the business for Kink Shoppe is events.
Kink hosts an array of different events throughout the year. For example, every first Friday of the month, Kink hosts First Friday Bondage demos, also referred to as “Rope Night.” This event showcases Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage. This event is free to attend and $5 to be tied up – the next one will be on Friday, July 5th!
Other Kink events include private birthday parties, bachelorette parties, private shopping, and other, rotating workshops.

Being Italian, pizza is a huge part of Italian culture and cuisine. 5 years ago, Colagero moved to the U.S. from Italy and opened Dolce and Cafe, an authentic Italian espresso bar. After the success of Dolce and Cafe, Calogero decided that it was time to bring his beloved pizza recipe to Northern Liberties.

While throwing axes, we were given many tips that we would like to share.
The Two-Handed throw:
Put both hands on your ax handle and make an X shape, by placing one thumb over the other
Position yourself by lining your eyes and body with the target.
Pull back behind your head and throw the ax forward, while keeping your momentum and follow-through.
2 most common ways people position their bodies while ax-throwing:
Step method: Move your body while throwing the ax, meaning you step up with one foot over the blue line.
Locked position Meaning you find your position, and lock up before throwing the ax.
Pro Tip: Line up, find your aim, as you step forward, pull back and release the end of the handle.
The overall end goal is to keep your eyes focused on your target.

Keith started at Spike’s when he was just 18 years old. At the time, he was attending Temple University. However, he loved Spike’s and the business so much that left college to pursue a full-time career there. He has been building up the business and the brand ever since!
“In the very beginning, it was a good thing that I was young and didn’t know what I was doing. I don’t know if I could do it today, it was a lot of hard work.”
– Keith Baldwin
In the beginning, Spike’s had a rocky start. The company only employed a few full-time employees, was not growing at a rapid scale, and was basically left for dead. Keith was working for a local sporting goods company that acquired Spike’s and merged the brands.
Keith learned everything he knows about being an owner and president of a company from the School of Hard Knocks. Nothing came without a learning curve, but Keith and Spike’s brand definitely came out on top after all was said and done.
In 2004, a long-time dream of Keith’s came true – he and many of his best friends, who he met through working at Spike’s, were able to acquire the business. Now Keith, Chris, Gary, Glenn, and Ted are all partners/owners of Spike’s. Over the past few years, they have been working tirelessly to build a supportive, productive, and, most importantly, fun workspace.
Spike’s Trophies Production
If you need something specialized for your event – Spike’s has your back. Whether it is a corporate award, office signage, or participation awards for a t-ball team, Spike’s will produce a high-quality product quickly for your business.
Spike’s incorporates state-of-the-art technology into their trophy and award making process in order to get your orders to you in a timely manner. Usually, there is a typical turn-around time of about three days for every Spike’s order.
Spike’s has done some amazing custom awards for prestigious businesses such as:
Phillie Phanatic – Silly String Award
Spike’s created this custom award for the Philly Phanatic. It was presented by the Mascot Hall of Fame.
AstraZeneca CEO Award
This award is known as the corporate Oscar – it is presented as the top award of AstraZeneca. Spike’s creates a similar award for many local businesses and corporations.
Broad Street Run Medals
Being an event-driven company, Spike’s does a lot of custom awards for local events such as the Broad Street Run or the Dad Vail Regatta.
Keith and the Spike’s team even made us our own award! It took 3-5 minutes in total after they received our logo. It is something Momentum and the Small Business Saturday team will cherish forever – thanks Spikes!
A fun fact about Spike’s? They have their own Mascot! Spike it the golden mascot of the company. He was trained by the Phillie Phanatic himself and can be found at many local events, bringing fun and laughter wherever he goes.
Spike’s is also home to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame! When the Sports Hall of Fame could no longer afford to pay for their space, Spike’s graciously offered them free space in their Northeast Philadelphia location. The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame is open to visitors every Saturday.
