Located in the Washington Square section of Philadelphia, Morris Animal Refuge still operates out of the home of the shelter original founder, Elizabeth Morris. The shelter has been operating in the city since it’s doors first opened in 1858.

This refuge is an open admission and lifesaving shelter, meaning that they accept any and every animal that is in need of a home. The Refuge commits their shelter’s services to animal adoptions, education, and high-quality care.

Morris Animal Refuge is proud to be America’s first animal shelter. At the Refuge, they believe that every animal deserves a chance to find happiness. If you’re looking to find the newest addition to your family, the Refuge has a number of furry friends available for adoption. Champ, a tiny black cat with birth defects leaving his front paws inverted, is still at the shelter waiting to be rescued.
