During this week’s episode, we sat down with Emily and Brian Kellet, co-owners and founders of STUMP plants.

STUMP is located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. STUMP originated in Ohio, where the founders grew up. They decided to set up shop in Philadelphia in 2018. STUMP specializes in selling houseplants – they are proud to say they have a plant that fits everyone’s lifestyle.

STUMP sets itself apart from other plant and flower shops in the city through their devotion to customer service and plant education.

When you are considering which houseplant best fits your space, STUMP has developed a process to help everyone bring out their green thumb. Before deciding on your plant, you can take a picture of the space where the plant will go and show a shopkeeper. They will recommend which plant will do best with for the spot you’ve selected, and give you a few different options to choose from.

Before going home with your new roommate, you will receive a care card explaining how much sunlight the plant will need, how much water you should give it, and how often you should water it. This system has converted many customers into plant lovers.

In fact, so many customers return to STUMP again after their first visit that STUMP is considering making a rewards punch-card program.

STUMP also loves to give back to the community. They have an ongoing initiative called “Giving Back Through Plants” where STUMP asks you to nominate someone whose life would be enhanced through having a houseplant added to their space. They invite all of their customers and website visitors to submit a story about why this person would benefit and then their team assesses how they can help.

STUMP also supports local artists. 90% of their plants are sent home in a pot handcrafted by a local Philadelphia artist. They have many other, rotating items, such as sage, available for sale that is also Philly made.
