7 SEO Metrics Every Small Business Should Track This Year

If you’re a small business owner trying to grow your online visibility, you’ve likely heard that SEO is a long game. But what exactly are you supposed to track along the way? That’s where SEO metrics come into play. These metrics basically tell you how your online profiles perform.

There are plenty of metrics to watch for, but we’re not diving deep into the technical aspects. Instead, we will walk you through 7 essential SEO metrics every small business should monitor. Let’s begin:

Metric 1: Organic Traffic

This one’s a no-brainer! Organic traffic is like foot traffic for your website. The more, the merrier! But here the emphasis is on “organic,” which shows how many people are visiting your site naturally, without paid ads. It’s one of the most important indicators of your site’s visibility and relevance in search results.

To measure organic traffic, you can easily use Google Analytics, especially through the “Acquisition” tab. Look for metrics like Sessions, Users, and New vs. returning visitors.

Keep an eye on this information to see if there are any seasonal trends or sudden drops that may indicate SEO issues.

Metric 2: Keyword Rankings

Your keyword rankings determine where your website shows up in search engine results for specific terms, and let’s be honest, most people don’t scroll past page one.

Once you start tracking keyword performance, you can tell how well your content aligns with what people are searching for. If your main services or products aren’t ranking, change your content or try a new social media marketing strategy with new keywords.

There are plenty of tools you can use, like Google Search Console, Semrush, or Ahrefs to monitor keyword positions. But the important thing is to look for high-intent keywords, long-tail variations, and new keywords that are easier to rank for.

Metric 3: Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Ranking high in Google is great, but if no one clicks, you’re leaving opportunities on the table. That’s why CTR is important.

Your click-through rate is the percentage of people who see your listing in search results and actually click on it. If the number is low, it usually means your content isn’t appealing or clear enough.

To monitor CTR, head over to the “Performance” section in Google Search Console. There, you’ll find data on Impressions, Clicks, and CTR for individual queries and pages. Find which pages have high impressions but low clicks. They’re the so-called lowest-hanging fruit!

There are a couple of ways to improve CTR. What we recommend is:

  • Write engaging, benefit-driven meta titles
  • Use meta descriptions that match searcher intent
  • Add numbers, brackets, or a question format to increase curiosity

A small increase in CTR can drive more traffic to your website without creating any new content at all.

Metric 4: Bounce Rate

When someone visits your site and quickly leaves without clicking anything else, that’s what we call a “bounce”. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but a consistently high bounce rate means something might be wrong.

Why does bounce rate matter? Because it’s indicative of how well your content satisfies user intent. Why does it happen? For a variety of reasons. For instance,

  • Your content didn’t meet their expectations
  • The page was confusing or slow to load
  • They didn’t know what to do next

To track this metric, use Google Analytics to view bounce rates per page or across your entire site. It’s especially useful to compare:

  • Blog posts vs. service pages
  • Mobile vs. desktop users
  • New vs. returning visitors

If you want to reduce the bounce rate, you can try a few tactics:

  1. Improve page load speed and mobile responsiveness
  2. Add internal links or strong calls-to-action
  3. Use clear headings and visuals to guide the user journey
  4. Make sure your content matches the search intent

Metric 5: Conversion Rate

Now, let’s talk money! Traffic is great, but conversions are what actually move the needle for your business. Conversion might be a contact form submission, a phone call, a newsletter sign-up, purchasing a product, or booking a service. Simply put, it’s any action that supports your business goals.

To find out how you’re performing based on this metric, head to Google Analytics and set up Goals that track specific conversion actions. Tools like Google Tag Manager help you monitor button clicks, downloads, or even scroll depth.

You can also look at conversion rates across different pages to see which ones drive the most (or least) results. If a page has a low conversion rate, you can:

  1. Simplify your calls-to-action (CTAs)
  2. Use landing pages with focused messaging
  3. Run A/B tests to experiment with headlines, images, or layouts
  4. Build trust with reviews, testimonials, or certifications

Metric 6: Backlink Quality and Quantity

Backlinks are when other websites link to yours. It’s like a vote of confidence in Google’s eyes. But it’s important who is voting for you! High-quality backlinks from trusted domains can significantly improve your search rankings.

To measure them, use platforms like Ahrefs, Moz, or Semrush. They’ll give you information like the total number of backlinks, referring domains, and link authority (whether it’s from a reputable source).

Remember, relevance and trustworthiness are much more important than sheer volume of backlinks.

Building good backlinks takes time. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Write guest posts for local blogs or industry publications
  2. Sponsor local events or collaborate with partners who can link to you
  3. Create shareable resources like guides, infographics, or toolkits
  4. Reach out to journalists using services like HARO (Help A Reporter Out)

Metric 7: Page Load Speed

And finally, we get to the good old page load speed. Speed is no longer a luxury; it’s what people expect. If your website takes too long to load, visitors (and search engines) will move on.

Google has made it clear that Core Web Vitals are part of their ranking factors, so performance is non-negotiable. You can use PageSpeed Insights from Google to analyze how your site performs across mobile and desktop. Aside from performance scores, it offers actionable suggestions to fix the problem.

The usual suspects you can watch for are large image files, excessive third-party scripts, and unoptimized CSS or JavaScript. To speed up your website, try the following:

  • Compress images and use modern file formats (e.g., WebP)
  • Use a content delivery network (CDN)
  • Minimize plugins or bloated themes
  • Enable browser caching

SEO can feel like a moving target, especially for small businesses. But with the right metrics in hand, it becomes less of a guessing game and more of a strategic advantage.

In other words, picking a few effective strategies and sticking to them will do you a lot more good than spending thousands on insane SEO tools that advertise indisputable success.

Below are 6 (Effective) and Affordable SEO strategies for small businesses.

Free & Affordable Keyword Research Tools

Effective keyword research doesn’t have to cost a fortune. But at the risk of sounding apprehensive, the lack of an effective keyword research plan will surely cost your small business a fortune!

Here are some tools that offer excellent value for small businesses:

  • Google Keyword Planner: Free tool for keyword suggestions, search volume, and competition data.
  • Ubersuggest: Free tool for a limited number of keyword ideas, search volume insights, and SEO difficulty scores.
  • AnswerThePublic: Generates keyword ideas by analyzing commonly searched questions and phrases.

Tip: Focus on niche-specific long-tail keywords. For example, instead of targeting “pet shops,” aim for “pet shops in downtown with express delivery.”

Personally I’m a huge fan on Neil Patel and UberSuggest because it has a FREE Version, it’s easy to use, and it works really well for SEO Audits and Keyword Research. Neil is a legend when it comes to SEO. Neil if you see this, give me a backlink!!

Get Backlinks for Free

Backlinks are essential for building domain authority which has a direct and positive correlation to your keyword rankings and growth. It’s vital, but trust me, it aint easy!

Nothing signals the search engines that you’re creating valuable, relevant, and authentic content more than your backlinks. It’s understandable why small businesses might shy away from link-building due to the rising costs.

But news flash: you can check competitors’ backlinks and create your own without spending a single buck. Here are some ways to build quality backlinks for free:

Guest Blogging

Writing guest posts for reputable blogs in your niche is a foolproof way to earn backlinks while showing off your expertise and experience. Start by:

  • Identifying blogs or websites relevant to your industry.
  • Reaching out with suitable pitches and good content ideas.
  • Including a link back to your website.

Tip: Focus on blogs with high domain authority (DA) to get the best results.

Be Present in Online Communities

Forums, Q&A platforms, and social media groups are treasure troves for link-building opportunities:

  • Give valuable answers on platforms like Quora and Reddit and link to your site where possible.
  • Be present in niche forums where your audience is, and share your content without being too salesy.
  • Your LinkedIn presence matters. Share your blog posts in relevant LinkedIn groups.

Network With Local Businesses

Collaborating with other small businesses in your area is probably the most affordable way to create win-win backlink opportunities. Here are some ideas:

  • Exchange links by featuring each other’s websites on resource pages.
  • Partner on local campaigns or events that link to both websites.
  • Share positive testimonials for them and ask them to do the same for you.

Those are 3 solid and Affordable SEO Strategies for Backlinking. Do it.

Tap Into Your Existing Audience

Just a tap. A little nudge. You know, reaching out to people you know and platforms you already use can provide some quick and easy wins for SEO.

You’d be surprised to know that your customers are your best source of keyword ideas, FAQs, and content topics. Use their feedback and questions to curate your SEO strategy and expand on your strong points.

Polling your social media followers is another way of finding potential topic ideas. Your clients and customers are the people searching. So just find out what and how they go about searching and then implement those tactics into your website, content and SEO.

Be Consistent and Patient

I’m not a very patient person, BUT you have to be patient when it comes to SEO. It’s the long game.

This will probably sound a bit cliche but there’s a reason cliches exist: SEO isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Regular updates and consistent effort are key to success, doesn’t matter how big or small your business may be.

Think of SEO as a snowball effect: the momentum builds over time, bringing about bigger results. That’s why you must always:

  • Publish fresh, high-quality content regularly.
  • Audit and update old pages to ensure they remain relevant.
  • Keep engaging with your audience through social media and email campaigns.

I love to refer to the gym/fitness example when it comes to search. Sure, you can take steroids (paid google search ads) to get fast and easy results, but its expensive, and doesnt last, and can you really trust it. OR you can play it safe and smart with the long-term strategy with consistency, just like going to the gym every day, and ranking and improving more organically. Pick your poison!
