Temple StartUp Studio Accelerator Marketing Speaker

This Summer I had the Opportunity to Speak about Marketing during the Temple StartUp Studio Accelerator. Watch the Video below!

In July 2021 our Founder and CEO, Mac Frederick, was invited to speak and present to the Temple StartUp Studio Accelerator program. He presented about his startup journey, entrepreneurial experience, starting multiple businesses, and how marketing can help grow a small company starting out.

Quick Intro about the Temple Startup Studio Accelerator Program

The 1810 Accelerator provides a place for the Temple University entrepreneurial community to share knowledge, experience, and connections that support the identification and evolution of new business ideas, and accelerate the growth of new ventures. Membership is open to students, alumni, faculty, and staff from all 17 schools and colleges at the University.

Anyone can apply and get approved. From there they will have classes, mentorship and startup tests to trial their new product or idea.

Startup Studio

The Temple Startup Studio accelerator is the official program run by the 1810 Accelerator and accepts a cohort each Fall, Spring, and Summer. Members of each cohort complete a 12-week curriculum to accelerate the growth of their ventures and provide necessary resources to move through the fund and launch process. Startup Studio culminates in a Demo Day where companies have the opportunity to pitch to potential mentors, investors, and industry professionals who can provide support based on unique company needs.

Temple Startup Studio Accelerator

You can apply to join the Temple Startup Studio Accelerator every year. Check for more details on the Temple website.

Initial Introduction and Background Presentation

The class started out with me telling my story and background. I grew up playing sports then got recruited to play soccer in college. I played D3 in VA Beach for two years then transferred to Penn State where I studied Advertising, Business and Entrepreneurship. While at PSU I started two companies, had a few jobs, and built out an eship club. This gave me a good background to relate to the startup teams in this accelerator.

After Penn State I was recruited by Google and went to work in their ads consulting department with small businesses. I was there for a year while working on my startup with Vortic Watches still. Then I started another small phone repair company on the side, doing all sorts of digital marketing and SEO for phone repair.

After 1.5 years I started an agency consultancy on the side with small businesses and Google found out and fired me. This was devastating but forced me to go all in on Momentum Digital and Phone Repair Philly and move to Philly. Since my time in Philly I’ve grown both companies to dozens of people and over 7-figure businesses. It’s been a lot of hard work but very important for these startup teams to understand and relate.

Q&A with the Accelerator Teams at Startup Studio

Why did I get fired and how did that force me to start the marketing agency?

Before I got fired I was running Ann Arbor iPhone Repair on the side making good money. I actually fixed an iPad for a local business owner who started asking me about his website and SEO. He asked if I could take a look and help him out. I didnt know what to do but told him I could do it, and then took the next 3 months to figure it out. This forced me to learn everything about websites and SEO in a short time period and was incredibly valuable for my career and growth.

During that time I was also consulting with small businesses as a Google Ads associate. Many of these customers also had questions about SEO, website and digital marketing. So I naturally referred them to my friend and we started working with them on the side. Coincidentally Google found out and immediately fired me. This was heartbreaking but forced me to go all in on starting the marketing agency and moving to Philly to start fresh.

What's a good piece of advice when starting a new company?

As a startup or new business I think you need to build proof of concept and go to market ASAP. Depending on the type of business, you need to test your product or service right away or find out if people actually want it and how much they will pay for it. I suggest selling your idea and seeing who will buy it then figure the rest out from there.

Richard Branson is a hero of mine who also believes you should land a deal and figure it out as you go. You will learn a lot and really be forced to find aa solution.

What should be the purpose of your website?

My biggest suggestions is making your website incredibly fast and mobile/user friendly. You need to focus on answering your consumers questionss as quickly and easily as possible. It really depends on the type of business and your target market, but speed and user friendliness are paramount.

What are some challenges I've faced as a business owner and entrepreneur?

You name it, I’ve seen and experienced it.

  • Issues with partners and ugly buyouts.
  • Unruly or dangerous customers
  • Hiring, firing and training employees.
  • Customers and employees stealing from me
  • Dealing with COVID and keeping the business afloat
  • Having employees start competing companies
  • Getting robbed, threatened, harrassed.
  • Audits by the state and IRS
  • Bad clientss, bad customers, bad interactions

How do we get good customers and reviews?

We literally try to ask and incentive all customers and clients at both companies to write us a reviwe or testimonial. People rarely write reviews naturally. They need encouraged. We offer discounts and incentives and try to ask everyone in person right then and there. 5-Star Reviews are paramount to ranking higher on Google with Local SEO.

What does Google care about for SEO?

There’s a few key things Google looks at and cares about for SEO:

  • Content and consistency
  • Page speed and mobile friendliness
  • On Page SEO, keywords, links, and quality
  • Off Page SEO & high quality Backlinks
  • Metadata, titles, tags, descriptions

Google really just cares about providing the best and fastest answers from reliable sources.

What types of ads did we run for Kickstarter and how did we have success with crowdfunding?

There are a few core aspects to running a successful kickstarter or crowdfunding campaign that I’d recommend.

  • Having friends and family lined up ready to donate
  • Get free press, PR and earned media
  • Put together a thoughtful and unique social media campaign
  • Run targeted paid ads and media with FB + Google
  • Use social influencers and your personal networks to promote it

SEO Marketer Interview with Mac Frederick

A little bit about SEOBlog & Momentum Digital

The writers at SEOBlog then reached out to Momentum Digital this spring in hopes to interview Mac. This quickly lead to a quick email Q&A as the world has shifted into these quicker and easier interviews.

SEOBlog ranked Momentum Digital as a Top 10 SEO Agency in Philadelphia, so we are proud of the accolade and recognition for this interview!

Read below as we get into the interview questions and answers!

What would you say is unique and/or challenging about the Philadelphia SEO industry?

“Philly is actually a small big city, meaning that it’s a close-knit community, especially in the city itself, so a lot of people know each other. There’s also tons of competition, with hundreds of agencies providing similar services. It’s quite easy to network and see a lot of the same people, but can be tough because a lot of large businesses arent in Philly, and a lot of small businesses can’t afford marketing.”

How does your agency stand out in a crowded market like the Philly metro area?

“We focus on unique methods like ‘Small Business Saturday’ to highlight and promote small businesses using video content. Also, being an SEO company, we rank very well for a lot of local-based searches. The ability to promote yourself before your brand can be important, so I spend a lot of time on marketing myself through social media and networking.”

Can you share a success story from a local SEO campaign centered around your area?

“The best case study I can give is with my other business, Phone Repair Philly. I started this with $1,000 back in fall of 2015 in a co-working space and have since grown it to four full retail locations doing over seven-figures in annual revenue. It’s been a grind owning and running two businesses but I can honestly say the main reason PRP is successful is because 80 percent of our leads and customers come from Google since we rank the highest everywhere in the city. Local SEO and Google My Business (GMB) has been the catalyst to our success, with over 100 keywords ranking top 3 on Google Search.”

What is the best advice you ever received in business?

“You can copy from others without reinventing the wheel and/or caring about what they’re doing. Find unique strategies based on what others have done and use that to propel your own business without cheating. Learn from those before you and add your own spin to it.”

What do you think is the most important quality that makes an agency truly great?

“People, process and production.

“People – You need to have the right people in the right place trained to do the right things. This is and always will be the hardest thing for most businesses.

“Process – You need to develop standard operating procedures and processes to running your business. Whether it’s hiring, onboarding, production or more, it needs to have a process.

“Production – Do the work you promise. Have it systemized like a production line.”

Any predictions for the future of SEO?

“Simplified. The older days of backlinking and long-form content wont be as necessary. Google always prioritizes the consumer and their user habits. They care about speed, mobile, video and getting the best answers fast. Google is also putting heavy emphasis on GMB and YouTube. So, follow what Google cares about.”

What is your reaction when you hear that “SEO is dying”?

“SEO will never die because people are curious and need answers. Google will always dominate the arena of providing answers to questions. The problem is, will they always trust businesses to provide those results? It’s going to become more important to become an authority in the search FAQ space.”

What do you think is the most important contributor to keeping clients happy?

“Keeping clients comes down to two things:

“One: doing what you promised; two: keeping a good communicative relationship.

“If you provide both, you can almost keep the client forever. It’s hard to maintain a long-term relationship by providing one without the other. Do the right thing and care about your clients, and put yourself in their shoes.”

Riverwards Produce Market Marketing Interview

Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Riverwards Produce Market in Philadelphia.

During this week’s episode of Small Business Saturday, we sat down with Vincent Finazzo, owner, and founder of Riverwards Produce Market, a corner store grocer located in Fishtown that aims to give the community resources for everyone to eat better and cleaner.

Subscribe to Small Business Saturday

Riverwards Produce Market opened its storefront in April of 2017. However, the market was doing business long before opening their brick-and-mortar location. The business officially started out as a produce box truck, supplying fresh produce to local small business in the city such as Philly Style Bagels and Martha Bar. The produce truck saw great success, so Vincent decided to launch a pop-up market out of a friend’s garage in Fishtown, blocks away from where they are located today.

After running the pop-up market for a summer, Vincent’s friend introduced to an amazing, historic building at the corner of Norris and Sepviva in Fishtown. He decided to take and leap and the rest is history.

The building and the beloved neighborhood destination, Riverwards Produce Market, was born.

produce store photography

Riverwards Produce works with close to 200 vendors to source and stock high-quality produce and grocery products. The market proudly stocks and supports as many other local businesses as possible. As you walk through the market, you will see “local” callouts on the price tags. The labels let shoppers know which products are locally sourced. We were happy to see that some of our favorite local businesses, including Zsa’s Ice Cream, Crust Vegan Bakery, and Baba’s Brew, were sitting on the shelves.

Riverwards Produce aims to maintain a sustainable, environmentally friendly approach to shopping. One way they do this is by banning plastic bags from the market. The market no longer stocks plastics bags. They offer paper bags to shoppers who didn’t bring a reusable shopping bag for free. They also offer biodegradable produce bags for 15 cents per bag. All of the money made from selling the reusable produce bags is donated to the Riverfront North Project, which is a Delaware River Cleanup Project.

riverwards produce

This isn’t the only non-profit initiative Riverwards Produce has. For the entire year of 2019, Riverwards Produce is Partnered with the Vetri Community Partnership to run a veggie of the month program. Every month, the market features a different vegetable in the market. Riverwards donates 20% of the profits from that vegetable’s sales back to Vetri.

Verti Community Partnership has an amazing mobile cooking kitchen. They bring the kitchen directly to schools and communities to teach people healthy cooking. The Verti mobile kitchen visits Riverwards Produce from time to time, like this past Sunday, April 28th. Verti’s goal is to make cooking lessons accessible to everyone.

Riverwards Produce Market stocks a full-line of grocery products. They aim to be a neighborhood staple.

At Riverwards Produce, anyone can stop in for a last-minute meal ingredient or to do their weekly shopping. With competitive pricing and a wide range of local and organic products, Riverwards Produce is the best choice around!

Cedar Street Barbell Club Marketing Interview

Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Cedar Street Barbell Club in Philadelphia.

During this week’s episode of Small Business Saturday, we sat down with Nick Pasquariello, owner and founder of Cedar Street Barbell, the only fitness club in the city to focus specifically on barbell strength training.

Cedar Street Barbell small business saturday

Nick founded the Cedar Street Barbell Club was founded in May of 2018. He felt stuck in his 9 to 5 job – there was no passion behind his work and he wanted something more.

After finding a fitness routine he loved, Nick wanted to share his passion with the world. Cedar Street Barbell was built completely from scratch by Nick.

Nick had always been big into fitness from the time he was a wrestler in high school. After high school, Nick joined a few different commercial gyms but was not finding the fitness plan and structure he needed there.

Feeling lost, he tried a few different types of fitness trends, such as Crossfit, but the overall Crossfit routine was not satisfying his fitness needs. One part of the Crossfit workout Nick really enjoyed was the barbell strength training, specifically the snatch, the clean, and the jerk, common weightlifting movements. So, he decided to pursue that.

Cedar Street Barbell Club interview

During his Crossfit experience, Nick learned what a barbell club was. While looking for gyms exclusively offering barbell strength training, Nick only came across one gym in Philadelphia – North Barbell Club.

This club changed Nick’s life. Barbell strength training gave his fitness journey the direction he was so desperately seeking. After 4 years of training at North Barbell, Nick decided to open Cedar Street Barbell Club.

To Nick, having the idea for the business and having its grand opening is easy. The hard part is the business’ maintenance and the day-to-day business operations.

A Unique Barbell Club is Created

Cedar Street Barbell Club

So, what makes Cedar Street Barbell Club different? Cedar Street specializes in training and mastering the barbell strength movements.

When joining Cedar Street Barbell, you will learn how to successfully perform the barbell squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press, and power clean. Cedar Street only trains barbell strength movements.

Coming into Cedar Street, Nick coaches everyone to teach you how to perform all of the barbell movements. Once you reach a certain level, you are placed on a structured strength program to build your strength. The Club never graduate from this program – they set their own goals for themselves on their journey.

Cedar Street Barbell Club wants all its members to grow as a person, build their confidence, and increase their overall strength. Cedar Street is an all-inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for anyone looking to get strong and transform their lives.

For more information about Cedar Street Barbell Club, check out their website at www.cedarstreetbarbell.com. You can also follow Cedar Street Barbell on Facebook and Instagram.

Interview with Lance Bachmann 1SEO

In this episode I sit down for an Interview with Lance Bachman, CEO of 1SEO

Lance Bachman is synonymous with SEO in Philadelphia. He started his agency over 10 years ago after an illustrious career with AT&T and Yellowpages. He has since grown his marketing agency immensely to over 100 employees in Bristol, PA. My goal was to learn his secrets on what motivates him and how he was able to grow his agency so big and so fast. So watch the video below as I interview with Lance Bachmann.

Can You Name the Top People in Your Profession?

Think for a second about one name that comes to mind when you think of the top dogs in your industry. If nobody comes to mind then you’re not setting your sights high enough. When I think of SEO (what is SEO?), I think of 1SEO and my new friend and mentor, Lance Bachmann. Maybe these names don’t ring a bell, but I bet you’ve seen one of their billboards along I-95.

Having mentors in your industry is paramount. To be the best you have to be around the best and think like the best. For the past decade Lance has been hustling in the digital marketing space to create a name and brand for himself, and boy has it worked. During my interview here you get a chance to see into the perspective of his life and how he started and grew 1SEO to the beast it is today. Just recently 1SEO was named by INC 5000 as one of the Fastest Growing companies for the 4th year in a row. Not too shabby.

Why did I interview Lance?

Well, to be honest I was truly curious as to not only how he started the company, but I also wanted to know how he was able to grow it and persevere over the past 10 years. 96% of businesses fail within the first 10 years, and that number is even higher for digital agencies. What you notice within the agency world is the amount of agencies that have trouble growing. It’s difficult to control your revenue streams and align it with a talented workforce that can help grow with you. Some of the main concerns I have going into my 3rd year into the agency world with Momentum Digital are around growth and hiring. It’s difficult to grow the business if you don’t have consistent revenue and the right people to complete your digital team. Being able to ask Lance these questions was important not only for me, but for every marketing entrepreneur. So that’s why I decided to videotape the interview, as well as go Live on our Instagram and Lance’s Facebook.

How did I get the interview?

Getting the interview with Lance Bachmann wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t as hard as you might think. Sometimes all you need to do in life is ask. That’s all I did. Granted, I put myself in the right position by going to a Philadelphia Internet Marketers Meetup hosted by Viral Ideas Marketing at the WeWork in Northern Liberties (where we actually have our office). My friend David Feinman puts together these awesome meetups in which I always attend to network and meet other local digital marketers. David specifically told me I needed to attend this event in July because Lance was speaking, and knowing that I run a similar digital marketing agency, he knew I would want to ask questions and meet Lance. This wasn’t my first time meeting Lance though. I actually met him a few times before, the first of which when he spoke at the Philly Tech Week in 2016. Since that day he’s been on my radar as someone to look up to and learn from. Believe it or not, I actually reached out to 1SEO as a prospective business in need of SEO using my company Phone Repair Philly as the lead ‘interested in their services’. His team member Bill reached back out to me and we chatted about SEO and what they could do for me, not knowing that I was just doing some recon on his sales and operations process. When I revealed my true angle they were cool about it and we still joke about it to this day. THIS is is the type of stuff you need to do as a small business when researching your competition.

Anyways, at this most recent marketing meetup, I spoke to Lance afterwards and exchanged information. The next day I sent him a short email asking to meet and come by his office to shoot a video interview. To my surprise, Lance obliged.

Talking more about the interview …

Well, before the interview I actually got a chance to tour the 1SEO office and kick it with Lance for a bit. He’s a really laid back and humble guy, but you can tell we’re both entrepreneurs and hungry for success. He came from a humble upbringing and has been grinding it on his own since high school. Not only is 1SEO extremely successful, he has many other ventures and investments, along with a great family and team around him. This guy is a role model, not only for us marketers but for entrepreneurs in general. Okay, back to the interview ….. So as we went live I began by asking Lance how he got started. His answer was after leaving more of a corporate sales job with Yellow Pages he started 1SEO with two friends in his house with nothing. They began cold calling and learning of the fly. The first year they only made a few thousand dollars. Curious at this point, I asked, “what next, what did you do to grow past that point of difficulty?”. Lance went on to explain the importance of adversity, hard work, and vision. They knew from the beginning what they wanted and how to get there so he simply outworked everyone else. From there, as you can see, the video goes on to talk about his thoughts on the current digital landscape, digital growth, hiring people and more. Overall it was a really smooth interview as Lance is really easy to talk to and never shy to tell his story.

“My first year as an agency, I was 35 years old, I made $8700” – Lance Bachmann

Key Takeaways

Something that surprised me the most is how he knew a lot about not only digital marketing, but business and entrepreneurship as a whole. I mean, this guy gets it. He’s also not afraid to take a chance and go all in for what he believes.

Understanding how to sell something is pivotal for any business and necessary for keeping the leads coming in to convert to residual revenue for the business. If I could stress one key point it would be to keep learning at every point in life so that you can grow and innovate your business. Lance also explains the power of people and having a good team so that everyone can focus what they’re best at.

Wrapping it up! Takeaways!

Find a mentor! Do it today. Sometimes all you need is to learn from someone who has done it before you. Learn from their mistakes and don’t be afraid to try new things and admit when you are wrong. Nobody is perfect and most of the successful people didn’t get their on their own! They had mentors too, and people they learned from, along with team members, family and friends. Being an entrepreneur is lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Take this time today to reach out to someone new, someone in your industry, and someone you look up to. Who knows, they might get back to you and soon be a mentor you can call your own.

This interview with Lance Bachmann was an eye-opener as he allowed me to learn more about some key struggles that I was able to avoid as we’re growing Momentum.
