Halcyon Floats Podcast

Watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Halcyon Floats!

Momentum Digital is back with another episode of Small Business Saturday, where we highlight a deserving company in the greater Philadelphia area. We recently sat down with Keri McGinn the founder and CEO of Halcyon Floats.

Halcyon Floats was established in early 2014, opening on March 1st in Northern Liberties. Keri, the owner, was introduced to floatation therapy while visiting a friend in Portland, OR in 2011. Commence obsessive mission to bring this amazing relaxation technique to the great people of Philadelphia, culminating in the place our city’s floaters now call home, Halcyon Floats.

What is Floating?

FLOATING, or Sensory Deprivation Therapy, is a relaxation and healing practice that involves restricting sensory input to achieve a deepened meditative state and pain relief. Our custom float rooms are filled with 10 inches of a highly concentrated Epsom saltwater solution. The density that results from almost 1300lbs of Epsom salt makes you completely buoyant as the healing solution supports your entire body along it’s natural supine curvature; you’re weightless in the float. The solution is skin sensor neutral, about 93.5 to 95.5 degrees, so you lose physical sensation of your own body, including aches and pains you may be use to feeling. The float spaces are sound-proof and quiet, lights can be turned off to achieve the perfect environment to rest the senses. Within the first thirty minutes of your float, you notice a dramatic drop in your stress level and an increase in your overall serenity, as the Epsom Salt solution works to heal and detox your body, and the floating position releases tension and pressure from your joints and muscles.

– Keri McGinn, Owner and Founder of Halcyon Float

Floating Benefits:

  • Stress relief
  • Pain Management
  • Injury Recovery

Cycle Brewerytown Marketing Interview

Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Cycle Brewerytown in Philadelphia.

Momentum Digital is back with another episode of Small Business Saturday, where we highlight a deserving company in the greater Philadelphia area. This Saturday we sat down with Tiffany the founder of Cycle Brewerytown.

Cycle Brewerytown – The Story

Seven years ago, Tiffany went through a major life change. At the time, she was working for her husband. Tiffany’s job involved doing various financial and accounting duties when she decided it was time for her to branch out on her own.

She quit her job, left her husband, and decided to pursue her passion for spinning. Tiffany suffers from severe anxiety and cycling has impacted her life very positively. Before she started her business, she could never see herself as a cycling instructor, let alone a business owner. Cycling has helped her manage her anxiety by helping her focus and stop thinking about all of the nonsense going on in her mind.

She is originally from Miami but found herself in Philadelphia a few years ago. In pursuit of a potential spinning career, she worked as a cycling instructor, teaching classes at different cycling studios throughout the city.

For years, her life was traveling to different studios to teach and training clients privately in between classes. Tiffany moved to Brewerytown and one of her clients suggested that she open her own cycling studio in Brewerytown because there was none nearby or in the neighborhood. She initially put the idea off because she had no money and did not think a cycling studio would be successful at that time.

Fast forward a few years later, Tiffany gained a business partner who pushed her to pursue her dreams. Now, Cycle Brewerytown has been open and serving the community for 2 years!

Cycle Brewerytown – The Vision

Tiffany always had a clear picture of what she wanted Cycle Brewerytown to be – a studio revolving around Hip-Hop. This studio is all about hip-hop.

During her days as a traveling spin instructor, Tiffany got in trouble for the kind of music she wanted to play during her classes. She was told it was too “dirty” or “explicit.” Tiffany likes unedited versions of songs by artists like Meek Mill and Rick Ross. She wanted to create a space where that type of music was welcomed and embraced.

Tiffany believes that this music motivates a lot of people more than other music like EDM or Pop music.

Apart from cycling classes, there are also…

Conditioning Classes

These classes are all about conditioning the body. They include exercises with battle ropes or jump ropes to get the heart rate up.

Weight Bearing Circuit Classes

During these classes, you will work with different types of weights like kettlebells, and dumbbells while using a resistance band.

Ride and Conditioning Classes

These classes incorporate both cycling and condition exercises. This class is a 30 minute split between the two workouts – cycling and conditioning.

Ride and Flow Classes

Tiffany’s favorite class – this option is a cycling class followed by a 30 minute, all hip-hop yoga flow instruction.

For more information about Cycle Brewerytown, check out their website at https://www.cyclebrewerytown.com/ where you can find their full class schedule – You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

While throwing axes, we were given many tips that we would like to share.

  • The Two-Handed throw:
    • Put both hands on your ax handle and make an X shape, by placing one thumb over the other
    • Position yourself by lining your eyes and body with the target.
    • Pull back behind your head and throw the ax forward, while keeping your momentum and follow-through.
  • 2 most common ways people position their bodies while ax-throwing:
    • Step method: Move your body while throwing the ax, meaning you step up with one foot over the blue line.
    • Locked position Meaning you find your position, and lock up before throwing the ax.
  • Pro Tip: Line up, find your aim, as you step forward, pull back and release the end of the handle.
  • The overall end goal is to keep your eyes focused on your target.

Spike’s Trophies Marketing Interview

Please watch our Small Business Saturday Marketing Interview with Spike’s Trophies in Philadelphia.

During this week’s episode of Small Business Saturday, we sat down with Keith Baldwin from Spike’s Trophies. With three locations – in Northeast Philadelphia, Center City, and on the Main Line –  Spike’s is a one-stop-shop for trophies, awards, plaques, signage, shirts, and more!

Spike’s Trophies – Founded in 1929

Keith started at Spike’s when he was just 18 years old. At the time, he was attending Temple University. However, he loved Spike’s and the business so much that left college to pursue a full-time career there. He has been building up the business and the brand ever since!

“In the very beginning, it was a good thing that I was young and didn’t know what I was doing. I don’t know if I could do it today, it was a lot of hard work.”

– Keith Baldwin

In the beginning, Spike’s had a rocky start. The company only employed a few full-time employees, was not growing at a rapid scale, and was basically left for dead. Keith was working for a local sporting goods company that acquired Spike’s and merged the brands.

Keith learned everything he knows about being an owner and president of a company from the School of Hard Knocks. Nothing came without a learning curve, but Keith and Spike’s brand definitely came out on top after all was said and done.

Spike's Trophies Team

In 2004, a long-time dream of Keith’s came true – he and many of his best friends, who he met through working at Spike’s, were able to acquire the business. Now Keith, Chris, Gary, Glenn, and Ted are all partners/owners of Spike’s. Over the past few years, they have been working tirelessly to build a supportive, productive, and, most importantly, fun workspace.

Spike’s Trophies Production

If you need something specialized for your event – Spike’s has your back. Whether it is a corporate award, office signage, or participation awards for a t-ball team, Spike’s will produce a high-quality product quickly for your business.

Spike’s incorporates state-of-the-art technology into their trophy and award making process in order to get your orders to you in a timely manner. Usually, there is a typical turn-around time of about three days for every Spike’s order.

Spike’s has done some amazing custom awards for prestigious businesses such as:

Phillie Phanatic – Silly String Award

Philly Phanatic Silly String

Spike’s created this custom award for the Philly Phanatic. It was presented by the Mascot Hall of Fame.

AstraZeneca CEO Award

This award is known as the corporate Oscar – it is presented as the top award of AstraZeneca. Spike’s creates a similar award for many local businesses and corporations.

Broad Street Run Medals

Being an event-driven company, Spike’s does a lot of custom awards for local events such as the Broad Street Run or the Dad Vail Regatta.

Keith and the Spike’s team even made us our own award! It took 3-5 minutes in total after they received our logo. It is something Momentum and the Small Business Saturday team will cherish forever – thanks Spikes!

A fun fact about Spike’s? They have their own Mascot! Spike it the golden mascot of the company. He was trained by the Phillie Phanatic himself and can be found at many local events, bringing fun and laughter wherever he goes.

Spike's Trophies - Spike

Spike’s is also home to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame! When the Sports Hall of Fame could no longer afford to pay for their space, Spike’s graciously offered them free space in their Northeast Philadelphia location. The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame is open to visitors every Saturday.

Zsa’s Ice Cream Podcast

Listen to the Zsa's Ice Cream Marketing Podcast Interview

During this week’s episode of Small Business Saturday, we sat down with Danielle Jowdy, owner and founder of Zsa’s Ice Cream, a local ice cream brand that serves up super-premium ice cream and ice cream sandwiches.

Subscribe to our Youtube for SBS Videos

Danielle, Zsa’s owner, founded Zsa’s Ice Cream in 2011. Zsa’s started as a hobby – Danielle was making ice cream on the side and selling the ice cream at different farmers markets on the weekend while Zsa's - Small Business Saturdayworking a typical 9-5. Working full-time while developing the business gave Danielle time to learn what she needed to achieve in order to get the business up and running. When she finally felt that she was ready to launch, she quit her full-time job and took the leap.

Danielle knew what she wanted to name her business right away – Zsa’s.

Zsa is a nickname that Danielle and her sister, Rebecca, call each other. When they were younger, they wanted to come up with a cool nickname by combining both of their names. Amongst all the searching, they saw the name “Zsa” somewhere and the rest is history. When the business was first developing, Danielle was advised not to name the business “Zsa’s.” However, Danielle didn’t agree. She loved the name because not only was it personal to her, it was unique, short, and memorable.Zsa's ice cream sandwich

Zsa’s began production out of a rented bakery warehouse kitchen then transitioned into making ice cream out of a rented kitchen in a private elementary school. The business sold ice cream out of their own branded ice cream truck at markets and local events before settling down in their current brick-and-mortar retail location. Danielle wanted the business to succeed, so she put a high-priority on getting Zsa’s placed in grocery stores. This was important so that the business was still making money during the winter months. So, Danielle went around, in person, to different gourmet grocery stores throughout the area to pitch Zsa’s to the grocery provider. It worked – now Zsa’s is in over 50 local grocery stores.

Zsa’s is now working on developing their new retail store is located in Mt. Airy!

As a small business owner and entrepreneur, Danielle has to wear a lot of different hats around the business. However, her favorite has always been testing and developing the new ice cream flavors. What are the Zsa’s fan favorites? WHYY considers their Salted Toffee Almond Graham Cracker ice cream sandwich with vanilla ice cream to be their best. Another crowd-pleaser is their version of an Oreo Cookie ice cream sandwich. This option is two dark chocolate wafers on the outside with sweet cream ice cream or coffee ice cream in the middle. Check out their social media for some amazing foodie pics of the ice cream and ice cream sandwiches.
